50 Million PlayStation 3 Systems Sold Worldwide

PlayStation 3

Sony announced today that the PlayStation 3 has reached the 50 million units sold mark. That figure doesn't indicate the number of systems sold to consumers, but rather the number that have been sold to retailers.

With that same qualification, it was also revealed that PlayStation Move sales have reached 8 million units. That's bound to draw comparisons to Kinect; Microsoft announced eight million sales (through to retailers) in the device's first 60 days of availability, enough for the Guinness World Records to name it the fastest-selling consumer electronics device. That number was bumped up to 10 million units last month.

The PlayStation 3 was released in both Japan and the United States in November 2006, followed by the PS3 Slim redesign's launch in September 2009. Move, on other hand, came out this past September and supports 155 games as of last month. Sony also claims that by December 2010, more than 480 million software units had been sold worldwide for PS3.
