Motorola preparing a quad-core, Android 4.0 monster?

Motorola preparing a quad-core, Android 4.0 monster?According to multiple reports, Motorola is already testing a prototype for the tablet that will succeed the Xoom.

The device is allegedly much thinner than the Xoom and will include the same 10-inch display as its predecessor.

Additionally, the new tablet will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, have a 2048x1536 resolution and be powered by a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor.

Speculation is the tablet will hit in time for Christmas, but there is the possibility Motorola will release it in February, a year after the launch of the Xoom.

We will keep you updated.

Senator Gillibrand Thinks PROTECT IP Is About The Internet Kill Switch

Last week, we wrote about how Rep. Anna Eshoo (whose district covers much of Silicon Valley) is apparently so incredibly out of touch on what PROTECT IP is about (despite it having a huge impact on the economy of her district) that she thought it was really about immigration. We were willing to chalk it up to a busy staffer sending out the wrong form letter, but there's growing evidence that our elected officials simply don't know what PROTECT IP is about at all.

David Segal from Demand Progress was kind enough to pass on that they've been watching the responses from elected officials to letters sent via their form about PROTECT IP and nearly 50% of them seem to be about things totally unrelated to PROTECT IP. Are Congressional staffers really that busy or are our elected officials just clueless?

As an example, they sent over this letter, sent in response to someone who wrote to Senator Kristen Gillibrand protesting PROTECT IP, which, you'll note, has nothing to do with PROTECT IP, but is instead about the "internet kill switch."
Thank you for writing to me with regard to legislation that would give the federal government the authority to turn off portions of the internet in the event of a major cybersecurity incident. I understand your concerns.

In the 21st Century, access to the internet has become an indispensible communication tool and a forum for vigorous public discourse. We have seen the power of the internet leveraged to promote democracy and topple repressive regimes in North Africa. While the internet has become a great tool for good, it has also provided new opportunities for criminals to exploit individuals, disrupt commerce and attack governments. For that reason, Congress and the Administration are working on various proposals to better protect the United States against cyberattacks and cybercrime. This is necessary if we are going to be vigilant against existing and emerging online threats and ensure a coordinated and coherent U.S. approach to cybersecurity. In addition, I have sponsored legislation to foster greater international cyber cooperation and ensure that the United States is working with other governments to address the threats emanating from overseas....
It goes on in that nature, but never once mentions anything having to do with PROTECT IP. It's pretty sad that our elected officials can't even be bothered to understand this bill that so many people are against.

ESRB dreams up Klonoa: Door to Phantomile on PS3 and PSP

When we saw this news, our giant wing-like ears flapped in excitement and we exclaimed in a nonsensical language. Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, one of the PlayStation's best (and only) side-scrollers, is going to be released on PSN via PSOne Classics.

That is, of course, assuming that's why the ESRB rated the game for PS3 and PSP. It's a pretty safe assumption. If you don't want to wait for the Wind Bulleting, enemy-grabbing action to hit PS3 and PSP, Door to Phantomile is also available in a more modern form -- it was remade for Wii.

Portabliss: Mighty Flip Champs DX (PSP Minis)

Did you know that you can download handheld games now? That's amazingly convenient! The only inconvenient part of it is finding the right games to buy -- and that's where we come in, with our Portabliss column. Three times a week, our new Portabliss column will tell you about a downloadable game on the iPhone, iPad, Android device, DSi, 3DS, PSP, etc. Today: Mighty Flip Champs DX!

We didn't have a periodic column about portable downloadable games when WayForward unleashed the bookish puzzle game Mighty Flip Champs upon DSiWare. WayForward graciously ported the game to PSP and released it as a Mini last week, affording us the opportunity to treat it as a new release once again and write about it here. Thanks, WayForward!

Japanese hardware sales, July 4 - 10: Super Mass Effect 3 Turbo Championship Edition edition

Did you guys hear the news? They're putting Vega in Mass Effect 3. Crazy, right? They must have kept this under the tightest of wraps; Joystiq's tendrils spread far and wide, and even our deepest undercover agents never picked up anything about a Capcom/BioWare partnership. What's next, BioWare vs. Capcom: Legendary Interbattle Fighter's Mix for the Citadel? The possibilities are endless! We wouldn't be surprised if this worked both ways, with Commander Shepard teaming up with Jill Valentine for-- what?

It's not that Vega?

... oh.

Fast Draw Showdown shooting to PSN July 19

PSN is bringing the small, evenly weighted guns to PSN with Fast Draw Showdown, slinging onto Move on July 19.

The PS3 version of Showdown is revamped from the WiiWare release of the arcade FMV light gun game, including multiplayer modes, online leaderboards and every cowboy's secret weapon -- a new wardrobe. Fast Draw Showdown will cost $9.99 on PSN next week, so polish your pistols now ... although that probably won't do much good for the game, since it uses Move controllers.

The Joystiq Indie Pitch: Pragmatica

Indie developers are the starving artists of the video-game world, often brilliant and innovative, but also misunderstood, underfunded and more prone to writing free-form poetry on their LiveJournals. We at Joystiq believe no one deserves to starve, and many indie developers are entitled to a fridge full of tasty, fulfilling media coverage, right here. This week, we unlock HiVE's apocalyptic puzzler, Pragmatica.

What's your game called, and what's it about?

This is Pragmatica. It's a programming-based puzzler set in a not-too-distant future, in which robots have, somewhat controversially, all but replaced humans as the world's industrial labour force. The largest and most powerful robotics firm, Pragmatica, hires you as a programmer, tasking you with writing programs to solve tasks using their expensive and highly volatile robots. Gameplay-wise, this means combine actions and conditions (SEE-WALL, TURN-RIGHT) into a program, then hitting the launch button and watching the robots execute it to complete the task, or crash and burn trying.

Retailer sites show new August date for El Shaddai

El Shaddai: Ascension of the Metatron is officially scheduled for release July 26, 2011, but it seems Amazon and GameStop have their own schedule, both listing its release as August 16, 2011. Considering El Shaddai has been in development since 2007 and has been delayed once already, perhaps the retailers are just assuming here.

We have contacted Ignition for confirmation of El Shaddai's release, or even just a date for when it will release information about a new release date, if that's Metatron enough for you.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Steam Improves its Content Delivery System

Steam

If you've ever struggled to download a new game on launch day from Steam, you'll be pleased to hear that Valve has upgraded its content delivery system. This should make it easier and quicker to download new titles that are in high demand, improve download speeds worldwide, and allow for more games to be shipped through Steam.

For those who are stuck with an ISP that has a monthly bandwidth cap (you poor thing), Steam will no longer force you to download unnecessary amounts of data when a game is updated. Instead, you'll simply download whatever has been changed, rather than the entirety of the files that have been updated. Updates can now also make their way onto Steam more quickly in the first place, thanks to a simpler process for developers.

Valve's announcement revealed some upcoming features Steam will be getting through client updates, including download scheduling, bandwidth throttling, and the ability to both prioritize the order that games are downloaded in and download updates for a game while playing it (the update won't be applied until after you're done playing).

10 Reasons State Street Is a 'Safe' Financial Stock to Own

Bret Jensen submits:

The Financial Sector has significantly underperformed the market for a long time now. JP Morgan (JPM) and Citicorp (C) reported better than expected earnings last week. So, is now the time to start to pick up bargains in the beaten down financial sector? One stock that I like here because of valuation and the consistency of earnings is State Street Corporation (STT) .

State Street Corporation, through its subsidiaries, provides various financial services and products to institutional investors worldwide. Its investment servicing business line offers services, such as custody, product-and participant-level accounting, daily pricing, and administration; master trust and master custody; recordkeeping; foreign exchange, brokerage, and other trading services; securities finance; deposit and short-term investment facilities; loans and lease financing; investment manager and alternative investment manager operations outsourcing; and performance, risk, and compliance analytics.

This business line also provides shareholder services, including mutual fund and collective investment fund shareholder accounting.

Blog Post: Installing and Configuring Data Quality Services

After you’ve downloaded Denali CTP3, it’s time to install DQS!

Here you can find some important information that will help you install and configure DQS successfully.

Data Quality Services (DQS) contains three components: DQS server, DQS client, and a DQS Cleansing SSIS component. The DQS server is installed on top of the SQL Server Database Engine, and includes two databases: DQS_MAIN and DQS_PROJECTS. DQS_MAIN db contains all the DQS stored procedures, its engine and the published knowledge bases. The DQS_PROJECTS db contains all the data quality projects information. The DQS client is a standalone application that enables you to connect to a DQS server, providing you with a highly-intuitive graphical user interface to perform your data-cleansing tasks, as well as other administrative tasks related to DQS. The DQS Cleansing SSIS component enables you to integrate the DQS functionality into an SSIS data flow, for batch execution. Each of these 3 components can be installed on separate machines, or on the same one – according to your needs. Refer to the DQS Help documentation for additional details on DQS and how it can be used.

All DQS components are installed through the SQL Server Denali Setup. Watch this video to walk through the DQS installation and configuration, step by step. For more detailed information, refer to the DQS Installation Guide.

Please pay attention: in order to complete the DQS server installation, some post-installation steps must be performed. Otherwise, DQS server will not be functional. These steps are explained in the resources mentioned above.

Do you experience any issues during installation? Check this page for troubleshooting, refer to CTP3 release notes, or contact us.

Enjoy!

Blog Post: Enterprise Architecture: arquitetura corporativa como instrumento de governana

Olá pessoal, tudo certo?

Vamos retomar o assunto de Enterprise Architecture, que já apareceu por aqui no blog diversas vezes. Veja alguns posts e artigos:

Enterprise Architecture: A arquitetura corporativa e o papel do arquiteto de TI
http://msdn.microsoft.com/pt-br/library/gg490650.aspx

Enterprise Architecture: uma visão sobre frameworks de arquitetura
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/wcamb/archive/2010/07/27/enterprise-architecture-uma-vis-227-o-sobre-frameworks-de-arquitetura.aspx

Enterprise Architecture: conhecendo as capacidades de sua plataforma de aplicações
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/wcamb/archive/2010/09/08/enterprise-architecture-conhecendo-as-capacidades-de-sua-plataforma-de-aplica-231-245-es.aspx

Um livro de leitura obrigatória sobre o assunto é o “Enterprise Architecture at Work” de Marc Lnakhorst et al., que recomendo abaixo:

image

Enterprise Architecture at Work: Modelling, Communication and Analysis
(The Enterprise Engineering Series)
Hardcover: 352 pages
Publisher: Springer; 2nd ed. edition (September 18, 2009)
Language: English
ISBN-10: 3642013090

Waldemir.
