If you've recently joined us at a Windows Azure event, thank you for that and thank you for wanting to continue the conversation by coming to this page! If you haven't had a chance to attend a local Windows Azure event, stay tuned to Canadian Developer Connection to get updates on anything and everything Windows Azure, including upcoming events, announcements, technical articles, and more.
For you as a developer, Windows Azure is all about leveraging the .NET skills that you already have and the tools, Visual Studio and SQL Management Studio, that you already know to create applications for the Cloud, whether they are new applications specifically written for Windows Azure or applications that you are looking to migrate from traditional hosted or on-premise to Windows Azure.
Now It’s Your Turn!
Watching us or others work work with Windows Azure is great, but now it’s your turn to give it a try! All you have to do is activate your Windows Azure account and follow the instructions below. That's it! That simple!
Let's get started.
Introductory Special
The fastest and easiest way to get started with Windows Azure is by signing up for the Introductory Special. With the Windows Azure Introductory Special, you get Windows Azure for free each month. The Introductory special does require a credit card, but as long as you stay within the included hours and resources, you won’t be charged for for anything. You can activate your Introductory Special here.
Windows Azure Pass
The Windows Azure Pass is comparable to the Introductory Special but it doesn’t require you to enter your credit card information. Also, you can only use your Windows Azure Pass for 30 days. After 30 days, your account and anything you may have deployed to it will be deleted. The only other caveat to the Windows Azure Pass is that, unlike the Introductory Special that is activated in real-time, it takes 3-4 days to activate your Windows Azure Pass and Windows Azure account. To get started with a Windows Azure Pass, head over to the Windows Azure Pass site, select Canada as your country, and enter the promo code CDNDEVS.
MSDN Subscribers
If you have MSDN Premium, Ultimate, or BizSpark, you receive complimentary monthly Windows Azure benefits that you can unlock for learning and testing. For more information your benefits and to activate your Windows Azure MSDN account, check out my blog post Ramp Up on Windows Azure MSDN Benefits.
With your Windows Azure account activated, you can test drive Windows Azure in two ways:
- I’m a developer and I’d like to go through all of the steps to deploy to the Cloud – work through my 9 part blog series Migrating and Deploying a Simple Cloud App.
- I’m a developer, but I’d only like to deploy the compiled package right now OR I’m an IT Pro and I’d like to deploy the package that the developers provide me – work through my 6 part blog series Deploying a Simple Cloud App.
Support Your User Group
Now for the best part - between now and midnight on 30 June 2011, you can support your user group simply by test driving Windows Azure today. After you’ve deployed your application to Windows Azure, follow these three easy steps and Microsoft Canada will countribute $25 to the Canadian user group of your choice on your behalf. That’s it! Simple as that!
With your application deployed to Windows Azure:
- Take a screenshot of the application running in the production environment.
- Send your screenshot to cdnazure@microsoft.com with the subject line “My Windows Azure Deployment”.
- In your email, include your name and the Canadian user group to whom your $25 contribution should be directed1.
We’ll take care of the rest!
We’d like to see as many people take part and deploy an application to Windows Azure. If you know any other developers, please share this page with them and have them deploy an application to Windows Azure as well. Our goal is to have every developer in Canada, like you, deploy an application to Windows Azure!
If, at any time, you have any questions about Windows Azure or have any difficulties deploying your application, please feel free to send an email to cdnazure@microsoft.com or to my email, jonathan.rozenblit@microsoft.com.
Last but not least, let's also connect on Twitter so that I can keep you up to date with latest on Windows Azure.
Enjoy your test drive.
1 The Windows Azure $25 community offer is good only in Canada and is limited to members of Canadian community user groups. There is a limit of one offer per person. This offer is non-transferable and cannot be combined with any other offer. This offer ends on midnight 30 June 2011, and is not redeemable for cash. In order to qualify for the promotion you must trial Windows Azure through the Windows Azure Pass, Introductory Special Offer, or your own MSDN subscription benefit and send an email to cdnazure@microsoft.com that includes a screenshot of your live Windows Azure application and the Canadian user group that you would like to support. Taxes and Windows Azure charges, if any, are the sole responsibility of the recipient. Please allow 6 - 8 weeks for your user group to receive their contribution.
