Unlike WoW, The Old Republic isn't Like a "Shopping List"

Star Wars: The Old Republic

Electronic Arts' confidence in Star Wars: The Old Republic, at least publicly, is very apparent. CEO John Riccitiello has stated his belief that it will take "a big chunk" of World of Warcraft's market and now EA Games president Frank Gibeau says that he sees The Old Republic as having enough advantages and differences from WoW for it to succeed.

Calling it a "big bet" for EA, Gibeau told Industry Gamers the Star Wars IP "is the largest IP in the world in terms of audience size," and that with BioWare at work on it, The Old Republic's appeal is "off the charts."

"World of Warcraft is the big competitor out there, but they launched six years ago, and they've built a tremendous service," he stated. "I've spent a lot of time playing that game; I love it. I love Blizzard products, but they're not the entire market. There is an opportunity to come in with a new IP."
