Spieler von Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 erhalten aktuell möglicherweise bösartige Phishing-Nachrichten. Wie der Live-Status des Xbox-Support meldet, erhalten Nutzer gezielt Nachrichten, wenn sie den Ego-Shooter spielen. Glücklicherweise passiert nichts, solange man die Nachrichten einfach ignoriert. Unser Team ist aktuell damit beschäftigt, die Angriffe zu analysieren und Gegenmaßnahmen einzuleiten.
Das ist natürlich bei weitem nicht so tragisch, wie der kürzlich gemeldete Angriff auf das PSN. Allerdings wird eins dadurch deutlich: Angreifer sind nicht mehr nur hinter PC-Nutzern her, sondern suchen sich immer häufiger Alternativen. Konsolen und damit verknüpfte Online-Dienste sind dabei lohnende Ziele: Sie enthalten häufig nicht nur private Daten der Nutzer, sondern auch sensible finanzielle Informationen wie etwa zu Kreditkarten - auch weil Konsolen inzwischen nicht mehr nur klassische Spielmaschinen sind, sondern zusätzliche Dienste wie On-Demand-Videos bieten.
Sicherheitsbewusste Nutzer haben relativ wenige Möglichkeiten, sich gegen direkte Angriffe zu schützen - auch weil es bislang kaum Zwischenfälle in dieser Größenordnung gab. Wie beim PC gilt es auch bei Konsolen, dass man den gesunden Menschenverstand nutzen muss, wenn Angebote hereinflattern, die einfach zu gut erscheinen. Zudem bieten nahezu alle System inzwischen eine Prepaid-Option an: Anstatt die Kreditkarteninformationen fest im System zu hinterlegen, kann man Xbox Live Punkte, PSN-Credit oder Wii-Punkte erwerben und zum eigenen Konto hinzufügen. Das mag nicht so bequem sein, wie eine hinterlegte Kreditkarte, die automatisch belastet wird - fallen die Daten in falsche Hände, spart man sich aber einiges an Ärger.
Ich frage mich, ob Hersteller von Spielekonsolen für die Geräte nicht inzwischen auch Sicherheitskonzepte entwickeln sollten, analog zu denen aus der Welt der PCs. Denn irgendwie mag ich nicht dran glauben, dass die beiden genannten Ereignisse rund um Xbox und das Playstation Network Einzelfälle bleiben.

Avoid Updating Fallout: New Vegas on 360 Until Tonight
Following numerous reports from fans of issues caused by the patch, including freezing and an inability to load save games or downloadable content, Bethesda has officially acknowledged the problems. "Regarding the Xbox 360 update, we've discovered a solution to the issue that's causing problems with game saves," a message on the Bethesda Blog stated. "We'll be hosting a replacement update on Xbox Live as soon as humanly possible. If you haven't grabbed the New Vegas update on 360 today, we recommend you decline the update until the new one is live. We'll be sure to let you know when it's up." The new update rectifying these issues is scheduled to go up sometime later tonight. An exact time could not be narrowed down except to say "it'll probably be later in the night." Unfortunately this is only true of those playing the game in English; Bethesda says "the wait is going to be a little longer" for those playing the game in other languages. If you haven't already downloaded it, avoid the most recently released title update for Fallout: New Vegas on Xbox 360.
Samsung Chrome OS netbook dubbed "Alex" coming next month?
Discovered this morning, a code.google.com page has shown off Samsung's upcoming "Alex" Chrome OS netbook. The netbook is expected to be revealed at the upcoming I/O conference next month.
If accurate, the page says the device will have a 1280x800 resolution, a dual -core 1.5 GHz Atom N550 processor, 2GB RAM, a SanDisk P4 SSD and a Qualcomm Gobi 3G modem, Ethernet, WiFi, Bluetooth, a built-in webcam, a card reader, USB ports, and a D-Sub outputs.
Other Chrome OS hardware, from Acer and other partners, could also be unveiled at the conference.
As stands, the "Alex" has similar specs to the Cr-48 Google Chrome Book, which was sent out to over 50,000 beta testers starting in December, including AfterDawn.

Barrick Gold Moves into Copper Mining

Barrick Gold (NYSE: ABX) is the world?s largest gold producer.
Last year, it mined net profits of $3.3 billion, but it wants more?
So it recently surprised the market with a $7.6-billion bid for Canadian-Australian copper mining company Equinox Minerals (OTC: EQXMF.PK).
Barrick expects to produce 300 million pounds of copper this year, along with about 7.8 million ounces of gold. And with the Equinox acquisition, that copper figure could quadruple.
The move might seem strange for a solid gold company. But Barrick wants to diversify, despite shareholder angst.

Barrick isn?t the only company interested in Equinox; China?s Minmetals Resources tried to acquire it, as well. So Barrick stepped in to offer a 16 percent premium to Minmetals? bid.
Industry advisers suggest that the bid hits above the six to eight times EBITDA earnings copper assets usually fetch. And it does amount to 8.5 times

Google faces $50 million lawsuit over Android location tracking
Google and Apple have both been in the news lately over details of how both companies' mobile operating systems store and transmit geolocation data. Following a class-action suit brought by two Tampa men targeting Apple over alleged user tracking, Google is facing a similar class action lawsuit filed in Detroit on Wednesday.
Last week it was revealed that iOS devices cache a large amount of location data in a file that is backed up to users' computers. The file is hidden from normal access on iPhones and iPads, but is unencrypted, and unless users also opt to encrypt iOS backups in iTunes, the file is also unencrypted. While someone would need physical access to either device to get the information, concerns were raised that the information could be used to track individuals, thereby compromising their privacy.
