iPad and Other Tablets: Outlook for 2011

Everyone has remarked on the success of the iPad. Now we have (slightly credible) evidence of other product successes and with that: optimistic predictions for 2011.

By all accounts, the iPad was a strong seller this Christmas season, but the official results won’t be available until Jan 18, when Apple releases earnings and sales for the quarter ended Dec. 26.

Blog Post: Exchange Hosted Archive?Archivierung f�r Ihre E-Mails in Verbindung mit Exchange Online Services

Exchange Hosted Archive (EHA) geh�rt bereits seit mehreren Jahren zum Online Services Angebot von Microsoft ? ein Produkt, welches ? so wie z.B. auch Forefront Online Protection (FOPE, ehemals FOSE, ehemals EHS) Ihre On-Premise Mailserver Infrastruktur erg�nzt. EHA kann mit Exchange Server ab Version 2000 eingesetzt werden (aufzeigen, wer noch einen produktiven Exchange 2000 Server hat!) und auch in Kombination mit den Microsoft Online Services ? Exchange Online eingesetzt werden.

Exchange Hosted Archive ist eine zentrale Archivierungsl�sung f�r Ihre E-Mails ? mit bis zu 7 Jahren Aufbewahrung Ihrer E-Mails. Im Unterschied zu anderen Mail-Archivierungsl�sungen wird EHA auch als Service bezogen ? in der Cloud versteht sich. EHA erstellt von jedem eingehenden, ausgehenden und internen E-Mail Nachrichtenkopien und legt diese in einem sicheren Archiv ab. Dieses Archiv wird dann indiziert und kann demnach sehr bequem durchsucht werden. Ein Vorteil des Services liegt auch darin, dass Ihnen EHA ohne Investition in eigene Hard- und Software zur Verf�gung steht und damit Ihre Gesamtbetriebskosten gesenkt werden. Mit Exchange Hosted Archiv steht Ihnen ein Backup-E-Mail System zur Verf�gung!

Exchange Online bietet seit einiger Zeit eine Mailboxgr��e von 25 GB an, EHA eignet sich hier zur zus�tzlichen E-Mail Archivierung und als Backup-L�sung sollten Ihnen die im Service enthaltenen 30 Tage zu kurz sein.

Die Einrichtung von EHA mit Exchange Online Services ist denkbar einfach:

Zuerst erwerben Sie �ber Ihren Partner das EHA Abonnement. Dieser richtet Ihnen dann das EHA Account ein.

In Ihrer Microsoft Online Services Konsole wird das Service dann ebenso konfiguriert (dies erledigen Sie entweder selbst oder Ihr Partner macht das f�r Sie):

1. Klicken Sie in der Verwaltungskonsole auf Diensteinstellungen, Exchange Online, Kontakte und dann auf Neuen Kontakt hinzuf�gen.

2. Gehen Sie folgenderma�en vor:

   1. Geben Sie EHS in das Feld Vorname ein.
   2. Geben Sie Journaling in das Feld Nachname ein.
   3. Geben Sie EHS Journaling in das Feld Anzeigename ein.
   4. Geben Sie in das Feld f�r die Journal-E-Mail-Adresse copy.NNNN@archive.messaging.microsoft.com ein.
      
      

3. Klicken Sie auf Erstellen.
   
   
   

4. Klicken Sie auf Diensteinstellungen, Exchange Online, Verteilerlisten und dann auf Neue Verteilerliste.

5. Gehen Sie folgenderma�en vor:

   1. Geben Sie EHS Archiving Group in das Feld Anzeigename ein, die E-Mail adresse ist wie oben, also copy.NNNN@.
   2. Deaktivieren Sie das Kontrollk�stchen Externe Absender zulassen, damit Sie keine unerw�nschten E-Mail-Nachrichten erhalten.
      

6. Klicken Sie auf Weiter.
   
   

7. W�hlen Sie gegebenenfalls Benutzer aus, f�r die die Archivierung im Rahmen der EHS Archiving Group erfolgen muss.
   Und das ist sehr bequem: wenn neue Benutzer dazu kommen, m�ssen diese einfach in der Verteilerliste hinzugef�gt werden und schon werden auch diese E-Mails archiviert!

8. Klicken Sie auf Erstellen.

9. Teilen Sie dem technischen Support von Microsoft Online Services mit, dass der Anzeigename Ihrer Kontakt- und Verteilerliste f�r die Archivierung ?EHS Archiving Group? lautet. Der technische Support erstellt dann mithilfe der Kontakt- und Verteilerliste eine neue Journalregel zum Senden der Premium-Journale an EHA.

10. Testen Sie EHA daraufhin, ob ausgehende, eingehende und interne E-Mails korrekt archiviert werden.

Damit steht Ihnen auch mit den Microsoft Online Services eine vollwertige E-Mail Archivierungsl�sung zur Verf�gung, welche mit einer geringen monatlichen Miete verwendet werden kann!

TSA Claims Naked Scanners Are Safe, But Exaggerated How They Make Sure That's True

I've said in the past that of all the complaints with the TSA's naked scanners, the one that initially concerned me the least was the "safety" claims about the x-rays used in the scanners. However, the more I hear, the more questionable it is to believe the TSA's claims that the machines are safe. As a bunch of you sent in over the past few weeks (but which I just had a chance to read through completely), the TSA is being exceptionally misleading when it claims that the machines are harmless, because it includes a little caveat that most people miss which potentially changes everything.

That is, it claims that the machines are perfectly safe "when they're working properly." But as AOL's senior public health reporter discovered, "the TSA offers no proof that anyone is checking to see if the machines are 'working properly.'" Well, it pretends to offer proof, in saying that a variety of groups, including the FDA, the US Army, Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab and something called the Health Physics Society all work with the TSA to make sure the devices are safe. But, Schreiber contacted all the groups listed and found that it's not what you'd think. Those groups do not make sure that the machines are properly maintained and calibrated. Basically, it sounds like most of these groups tested or examined one or a small number of these machines -- often not the ones actually installed at the airport, to see if, conceptually, the machines are safe. But none of them have anything to do with making sure the machines are maintained and calibrated safely, such that passenger safety is not put at risk. In fact, one of the groups listed -- the Health Physics Society -- noted that the TSA actually refused to provide data that the TSA collects on radiation exposure from the scanners.

So despite the fact that scientists are quite concerned that ill-maintained scanners or mis-calibrated scanners can cause serious health problems for people, it does not appear that the TSA has any serious specific program to guard against this. So, the machines are safe, if they're working properly, but no one's making sure that they're really working properly -- other than the TSA, who doesn't give much details into what's actually being done to make sure that the machines are, in fact, calibrated and maintained properly.

Se tienen varias estrategias de respaldo en bases de datos de gran tama�o (Conocidas por sus siglas en Ingles VLDB Very Large Databases). A continuaci�n se mencionara recomendaciones generales, tomando en cuenta que dependiendo de la arquitectura y necesidades de la compa��a estas cambiar�an.

 

- Organizar la informaci�n contenida en la base de datos

Tomar ventaja de la funcionalidad en SQL 2005 donde nos permite particionar la informaci�n y colocarla en diferentes ?FileGroups?. Por ejemplo partir una tabla grande de hist�ricos por fechas moviendo la informaci�n de poco acceso hacia otro Filegroup.

Bajo el mismo contexto mover objetos a otros ?FileGroups?. Notas importantes a considerar sobre esto �ltimo:

• Se tiene que tener un archivo creado en el ?filegroup? destinatario que ser� el recipiente para los objetos.
• Para mover tablas se hace moviendo el �ndice cluster de la tabla, en caso de NO tener un �ndice cluster se puede crear un �ndice cluster apuntando al ?filegroup? destinatario, esto causar�a que se mueva la Tabla.

- Hacer respaldo/restauraci�n por ?Filegroups? o por archivos, tomando ventaja del punto mencionado anteriormente.

A partir de SQL 2005 se permite tener ?FileGroups? en estado ?Fuera de l�nea? simult�neamente con ?FileGroups? ?en l�nea?, esto nos permitir�a restaurar mientras la base de datos esta semi-operacional aclarando que consultas hechas a ?FIleGroups? que se encuentren ?Fuera de L�nea? no ser�n respondidas.

- Realizar el respaldo en paralelo utilizando el mayor n�mero de dispositivos (Disco/Cinta) disponibles hasta un MAX de 64 en SQL 2005/2008.

Lo que se hace es redistribuir la comunicaci�n por N n�meros de dispositivos acortando los tiempos. El cual se ayudara m�s, si cada dispositivo tienen su propia tarjeta SCSI

- Analizar los tiempos de respuesta utilizando el par�metro de compresi�n en las opciones de respaldo, aun cuando en la mayor�a de las veces se observa mejoras bajo ciertas condiciones pudiera decrementar el rendimiento.

Considerar que la naturaleza misma de la compresi�n incrementara CPU.

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers receiving fan translation

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers is a game originally released back in 1997 for the Sega Saturn in Japan. It was a sequel to Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner, itself a game within the same Megami Tensei universe inhabited by the Persona series. Publisher Atlus has tried a few times to bring the title to the states, but Sony hasn't yet allowed it, so a group of fans calling itself "Devil Hackers" is working on a fan-made translation of the title, playable on the PSP.

You can watch a "teaser trailer" of the translation after the break -- but someone needs to translate the word "teaser" for the Devil Hackers, because it's thirteen minutes long. Assuming things work themselves out, fans interested in playing the game in English should get their chance soon.
